April 10 - The Nets are Up!
Well, they were never actually down as, apart from the weeks of artic weather, tennis at Gilnahirk went on as usual throughout the winter. Saturday 10 April however, saw the official start of the Gilnahirk tennis season with the usual 'Opening Tournament'. A favourable upturn in the weather brought out the biggest crowd of participants for quite some time and ensured a busy day of tennis. The men's competition was a close run affair with only one point each between first, second and third places whilst Julie-may Noteman managed a to gain a slightly clearer lead taking the ladies' title by a two point margin.

September 09 - GTC karaoke singers strut their stuff!
After a summer season that yielded a mixed bag of tennis results a small 'band' of club members aimed at getting a perfect 'score' in another discipline. An Indian meal preceded the karaoke which the diehards carried on until the wee small hours. In the end Graeme Howes took the honors coming away with the highest score as awarded by the karaoke machine. Afterwards Hugh, the machines owner said "well done to Graeme but it looks like I'm going to have to send the device back to the manufacturers to have it re-calibrated as it is obviously malfunctioning!"

May 09 - Captains' Day Tournament
The annual Captains' Day Tournament was almost won with two perfect scores. Ronnie McFarland pulled out a maximum 24 points from his four matches to win on the Gents' side whilst Amanda Calvert dropped only one point during the day to take the Ladies' title with 23. All very impressive given the fairly miserable conditions which resulted in a lot of disrupted play and, as early on it looked as if any idea of play might have to be abandoned, the 'after' tennis tea being taken before play began!

April 09 - Another season gets under way
The 2009 season kicked off at GTC with the traditional opening tournament. A new format played in sunny but blustery conditions allowed relative newcomer Graeme Howes to retain his title from last year. Graeme managed a 'perfect' score, winning maximum points in all his matches. The ladies title was clinched by Doreen Halliday who nipped to the top of a group of three ladies finishing within three points of each other.

February 09 - 'A' Team take runners up spot in Floodlit League
The Floodlit 'A' team, captained by Adrian Armstrong, took the runners up position in division 2 of the Floodlit League. Despite a steady perfromance across the season, losing just one match to Ballynafeigh cost the team the vital ponits they needed to take the title. On the bright side, the result means that the team will not have to hold their own in division 1 next year! |
February 09 - Christine Sharpe and Anne Moore make semi-final of the Irish Veteran Indoor Tournament
Christine Sharpe and Anne Moore took on Ireland's best veteran players during the recent weekend tournament at the Ormeau Indoor Tennis Centre. Their challenge for the over 45's title included a tight quarter final match against Audrey Ross and Mairead Campbell winning 1/6, 6/3, 10/7 in championship tie break. The gallant pair finally went down against the number one seeds Jill Lyttle & Linda Andrews in semi finals 3/6, 1/6.
After the match the girls admitted that the speed of the indoor courts took them by surprise but conceded that they were beaten by the stronger pair. None the less, a very creditable outing for the Gilnahirk duo! |
